Standards

I'm trying to write the critical evaluation on standards but feel I am just repeating what is written without the input necessary..

Monday

I gave up on the chat room on Monday night. We had a holiday in Qld and I was planning to really get myself going with the assignments and readings but had real trouble with interact all afternoon. Thought it was my new computer but am relieved to see it wasn't my problem. I still can't access the vidcasts - will try the school computer tomorrow.
Am feeling a bit better about where I am after reading comments in chat room.

Todd's Article

Todd's article (2008)is reassuring in that data collected shows that teachers do want to work collaboratively for a whole range of reasons.
eg#.improved pedagogy
#improved delivery of teaching
#improved access to resources and librarian help
#building a collegial relationship
So even though they wanted the social and collegial relationship they also saw that this offered better opportunities for students to learn.
Librarians wanted collaboration to
# reach out more
#market school library services
#spread information literacy skills
#lead to being valued as librarians
#help them offer an integrated notion of library as part of the whole
If we accept the complementarity of strngths rather than the similarity as Todd suggests collaboration will be more effective.

books are dead?

Thanks Ruth Buchanan (skerricks.blogspot on oz-lit) . You made my day with the " Young people hate books and dead tree publishing is finished" You tube video.

Collaboration

After reading Fullan's article it seems that it is very difficult to generalize about collaboration as each school has its own setup and unique, changing situation. We need to look at why certain schools can make it work even if they have different perspectives within the school community. We need to foster the"creative mix"

SAUCE model

I quite liked this model . SAUCE
1. Setting task - learners ask the how, what, when, where, why and who drawing on prior knowledge.
2. Acquire information - a number of steps.
3. Use information - This requires use of higher thinking skills.
4. Communication- clear, creative communication.
5. Evaluation-product and process with more emphasis on process.

The more I read the more I learn.

Quest

I like the idea of the way the info is presented in Quest. The links were useful and it presented good background reading on IL models.

Kuhlthau

Have reread Linda Langford's article information literacy -a clarification. I like what Kuhlthau has to say when she affirms that to be literate involves the ability to construct knowledge with a view to learning throughout a lifetime as well as recognizing when information is required. The learner is empowered to learn independently and interdependently.
Candy also sees the attainment of education as a lifelong goal.
Owen also supports this idea but takes it further by saying that it should be the key competence for individual and societal development in Aust .
The responsibility for the Tl is huge.
Working together to bring this about will remain a major challenge.

What am I doing?

I am struggling to get started on the next assignment . Hopefully I'll get a clear go tomorrow and actually decide which of the three models I will work with. The critical evaluation has me a little concerned. I am still trying to finish a library diploma course I started last year as well. It's not difficult but is quite time consuming. To add to the time shortage I will travel to Melbourne again this week (for the fourth time in three months) to see my brother who is very ill.
Time to stop for today and play with the grandchildren

reading

I have been reading with interest some of the discussion on the iquiry into school libraries that has been posted on Oz Lit. It will be interesting to see the end result. Will there be TLs to staff new BER libraries?
Have started getting into module 4 (have had some family issues to deal with so am a bit behind). The AASL article was well worth reading as it was more up to date and had positive feedback from classroom teachers on the benefits of working with the TL.
The Big Six keeps coming up in different articles I read.

OZTL_net

OZTL is a great listserv. I have read some helpful info. Was very impressed to see mention of the Courier Mail articles posted there this week. I really liked Karen Brooks reply especially for primary schools. If we can't instill a love of books, imagination, stories and language nothing else will happen without a lot of work.

I read an interesting article my Karen Brook in Wed Courier Mail on the place of the tl in schools. She was very supportive of the contiued need for qualifie Tl s in school. She had some great points.

Time to focus

I have been re-reading the role of the TL and keep coming back to Literature Promotion. I hope this aspect of the job is never overlooked as for me it is a bases for all learning.

Aust curriculum

Last Tues [23rd march] I went to the Curriculum Support teacher's network meeting at Springwood BCE service centre where we had a close look at the new curriculum. It was very useful for me to get an overview rather than look at a year level as I once would have done. I looked at the scince in more detail and it was great to have the 'experts' plus other curriculum teachers with us for some very useful discussion.
I like the look of it although until Qld catches up with our preps only now in year three there will be some challenges. It will be easier when we are in line with other states.

What am I doing?

After feeling totally overwhelmed , I am just beginning to think that maybe I can cope with on-line study. What is scarier is reading about the role of a TL. I have been in the job a matter of weeks and can't find any spare time yet I'm only doing a fraction of the job description.

My blog

It's taken me a while but I've finally got started.
I've enjoyed the reading and have found that the reading and assignments I have already done for a TAFE course I'm doing for library management really helpful.
